The Rise of the Tomb Raider 2015 series is the
re-launch of the Tomb Raider franchise from developer Crystal Dynamics and the
publisher of Square Enix. This is the eleventh game in the series and the
second game in Survival Time.
Microsoft announced in E3 2015 that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be a special timed
release for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One on November 10, 2015.
The PC version was released on January 28th 2016 via Steam and
Windows Store.
The PlayStation 4 version, called Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, was
released on October 11, 2016 to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the
release of the original Tomb Raider. Includes all previously downloaded
content, as well as PlayStation VR support for “Blood Ties”. Later, a game
patch was released that added support for the PlayStation 4 Pro, which offers
game enhancements such as enhanced mirrors, 4K resolution, and a higher frame.
The Xbox One X was released on November 7th 2017, and the game
patch was released on the same day. This episode offers Rise of the Tomb Raider enhancements similar to
the PlayStation 4 Pro version of the game. Feral Interactive has launched a
20-year festival program on macOS on April 12th 2018 and Linux on April 19th
2018
GamePlay:
Rise of the Tomb Raider uses a third-person
tradition of shooting / installing platforms / puzzle games for the first games
in the series, using the exact same style as the previous game. The game also
introduces some gaming machines that were not available in the previous game,
including rope bending, wrestling, swimming
Lara has access to many weapons of various kinds, such as bows
and pistols. Everything can be changed depending on the preferences of the
players. Salvage was also used to develop weapons.
Lara uses her physical strength, riding axes, and later, a
combat knife, to engage in melee warfare. Lara can deal with enemies from
stealth or more.
While the health upgrade remains (it changes by changing the
difficulty of the gameplay on the menu), Lara must find and hold the cover long
before her wounds begin to heal during the fight. Severe injuries (shown in
black and white) will require bandage treatment, although Lara may gain the
ability to heal immediately and return to full health (once at the joint.)
Stealth has been revived, as Lara is now able to hide from
animals and people. Lara can also climb trees, hide in the leaves to avoid
being caught by enemies, and immerse them in water to make way for landing.
Collectible:
Like the previous game, texts and art objects can be found all
over the world. The script expands the gameplay, narrates the history of
Kitezh, and the hunt for the Divine Source by various groups. Archaeological
finds from ancient Byzantine relics, up to the time of the Cold War, Soviet
objects, and the Trinity.
These collections can also help to increase Lara’s knowledge of
the Rise of the Tomb Raider, as some are written
differently allowing Lara to increase her ability in it.
Development:
Crystal Dynamics oversaw the development of the Xbox One and PC
versions, while Nixxes Software upgraded the Xbox 360 version. The PS4 version
was developed in partnership with Crystal and Nixxes.
Towards the end of the development, Brian Horton issued a statement
saying Rise of the Tomb Raider was pushing the
boundaries of the Xbox One, which many thought was troubling, as the console had
not even completed its second year of its life cycle.
Like the previous game, Rise of the Tomb Raider was built on the
foundation of Crystal Dynamics, but used a new face mask called Mova. Using
fluorescent paint, Mova was able to use 7000 reference points compared to the
90 used in the previous game.
